Cozumel Dive Report #2 - Sunday 9-9-13
Sunny and a few clouds - 82 Deg. F and a slight wind...the sea is flat calm, some rain today. 1 Carnival cruise ship today at the southern pier. Downtown quiet and some shops closed. Scubadawg is going diving again today. The Palancar complex vis was much improved.
Hopped on the Blue XT~Sea boat Bandida II at 1400 at the Aldora Pier. Said howdy to Santos, Pedro Pablo and Cap'n Nivo from Blue XT~Sea. 4 pax on board (Dick and Sue from the UK, Jena (Boo) and me plus Cap'n Nivo and DM Pedro). Heading South today for afternoon dives, due to scheduling of other divers. No Sweat, and got to sleep in today.
Dive #1 - Palancar Caves - 82 ft. - 1:03 - 80 Oceanic deg. F. - < 1 Kt. current. Only boat onsite when we got there and it stayed that way. Beautiful hard and soft corals. Saw 1 Pipehorse that Pedro pointed out. What a cutie! Saw sveral Hawksbill turtles and a 5 ft. or so Black tip Shark off the back of the wall. The usual cast of reef characters. Mike Settles (Scubadawg) went diving for the 2nd time since his untimely passing on October 24, 2012. Jena (Boo) brought a vial of his ashes on the dive in a baggie. The vial top sticks at depth, so we have to do it at the safety stop. The ashes got scattered at the safety stop with appropriate ceremony, salute and dignity. Mike got to do the whole dive before being released. Mike is making his way around Cozumel for sure...
S.I. at the Paradise Beach club. We were the only tourists as far as the eye could see, again. Cookies, orange juice and water. One of those big-ass catamarans pulled up, dropped off a couple and split. Used the bano and Jena and Sue took a dip in the pool to rinse the salt off
Dive #2 - Punta Tuniche - 62 ft. - 1:01 - 80 Oceanic deg. f. - Frisky current. Bunches of Splendid Toad Fish with attendant Arrow Crabs, 1 large Green Moray and a Spotted Moray in holes about 10 ft. apart, and another jumbo Green Moray by itself, large schools of everything, a Cow fish and two Hawksbill Turtles. Nice coral and a fun lazy, drifty dive. We scattered a 2nd vial of Scubadawg´s ashes, again at the safety stop.
Dropped off at the Aldora pier and went back to the hotel about 1900. Washy washy the gear, and filled out the log (700 dives to date). Had a Dos Equis beer, and Dick and Sue and Boo stopped by for a drink in the room after this activity. I put the gear outside after a drip dry in the shower.
Dinner was at La Terraza and most had a pasta and/or fish dish followed by ice cream with Kahlua and a slice of Key Lime Pie.
4 dives so far... I hit 700 dives after the 2nd dive today and Boo hit 400. Whoopee...a cause for celebration!
