Politics and mission usually trump the Collision Regs for them.. what they steamed inbetween was apparently a refueling operation.

Sea Shepard ships are lucky they still float if that is the SOP.
OTOH will the crews on them survive in the local water temperature until the restricted maneuverability refueling operation is complete and the ships can turn around to start looking for survivors...

Pirates? Yes indeed according to the 9th Circuit Court which is regarded as having a typically liberal bent. This seems to pose all sorts of new legal problems for Watson and company. http://seattletimes.com/html/localne...pherdsxml.html

Uh, yeah, if you can't defend your ecological okayness in front of the 9th Circuit, then you do indeed have a problem..

It is unfortunate that whatever entity made whaling in Antarctica illegal isn't out there enforcing the anti-whaling law.

    Yes, it is.

The International Whaling Commission made commercial (the Japanese ostensibly whale under the auspices of research) whaling in Antarctica illegal in 1986 & formally designated the region a whale sanctuary in 1994. The IWC has no on-water enforcement arm.

Australia established the Australian Whale Sanctuary in 1999, designed to protect whales within Antarctic waters over which it has jurisdiction. AlthougH OZ is very unhappy about Japan's whaling activity, enforcement would mean sending in the navy, which they understandably are very reluctant to do.
