    Poll--Old Magazines

I was cleaning out my room at home and threw out a lot of old Scuba Diving Magazine and Sport Diver magazine--of course I kept those where I thought the articles were fantastic and compelling or if the magazine was hard to come by/from over seas, but I decided it was time to do a little spring cleaning.

Which got me thinking--I who here keeps there old magazines, re-reads them and why.

Hello. My name is Jim. I'm a scuba diver.

My house was sinking into the ground from the weight of accumulated dive magazines, Scuba Diving, Alert Diver, the old Skin Diver, Dive Training, Asia Diving, and more! I had entire sets of some of them.

But it was too much and I tried to get rid of them. I tried selling them on eBay but to no avail. For the few that sold, the shipping cost was more than the final bid amounts.

I finally tossed the remainder into the dumpster. The dumpster was so full and heavy that when the garbage truck came to empty it and hooked onto the dumpster, the back end of the truck lifted off the ground when it tried to pickup the dumpster.

Now I mostly read the magazines and then toss them before they accumulate. Note: it also depends on the quality of the magazine. The one that I now tend to hold onto the longest and reread is Alert Diver.

DSAO -- you don't have to quit diving, but you might have to quit saving the magazines

I'm just here between dives unloading nitrogen, refilling tanks, and talking with buddies.

Just recently cleared all ours out. Even had them all nicely organized in binders. But, they went into the recycle bin not the dumpster. The few I kept were because they had photos or articles from people that I know.

I'm transitioning to the electronic version to deal with this precise issue.

Thanks for the point about going to recycling, not the landfill. I agree (and actually recycled many of mine that way and continue to do so).

Also, I have to admit that I DO still save a few with outstanding photos and articles. I haven't completely broken the addiction yet!

As an aside, getting rid of clutter, much of which was old dive magazines, was what got Mrs. Lepomis to become dive certified! I had been encouraging her to get certified for years. One day when I came home from work, there was a note on the keyboard of my computer that read "You clean up your office and I'll get scuba certified"! The rest is history ... DSAO -- with less clutter, a clean environment, and best diving buddies

    Poll--Old Magazines

    Shame on you.

To show proper appreciation to those who produced these publications for you you should have used the pages to make an origami ocean-full of creations, which should then sent to the homes of the editors.

    (PM me for an address.)

As for me, I'm lazy so I recycle them when the stack gets so tall that it falls over.

BTW- I read Alert Diver on my iPad now as they did such a good job of transitioning to an e-edition.
    Insert pithy quip here.

I pick up Dive Training and whatever other freebees are available at any LDS I visit. When I finish reading the newest issues, I occasionally pick out one from the bottom of the pile toi re-read. As this doesn't happen too often, I voted that I save but don't re-read them.

I was reading this on my mobile and didn't realize there was a poll. Changing to full version allowed me to see the poll. I voted that I keep and don't re-read because I still keep a few even though I have quit hoarding.

I keep them for 6 months, then they go into the recycle bin.
I will admit to moving more towards the e-versions now, so for SDM I have two subscriptions, which will change to e-version only as soon as my print subscription runs out.
I will be doing Alert Diver by e-version as soon as my print subscription ends.
A CLEAR CONSCIENCE IS USUALLY THE SIGN OF A BAD MEMORY
